Herbert Haseltine horse bronze
About the Item
Note: Herbert Haseltine was the Italian born son of the American landscape painter William Stanley Haseltine, and graduated from Harvard in 1899. After studying drawing and painting, he turned his attentions to sculpture and settled in Paris in 1905, where (apart from the War years) he remained until his death in 1962.
He is best known for his equestrian bronzes, a genre in which he is considered one of the greatest exponents. His 1934 life size bronze of ‘Man-O-War’, exhibited at the Kentucky Horse Park is regarded as the finest equestrian sculpture of the 20th century.
Haseltine also executed a number of spectacular polo bronzes a 1/3 and 1/2 life size for eminent polo players such as Harry Payne Whitney, including the Hurlingham Trophy in 1921, of which an example was presented to each member of the British and American teams by the Hurlingham Club.
The bronze offered here, although untitled, bears a strong resemblance to Heseltine’s 1912 bronze of ‘Ballantrae’ executed in 1/3 life-size for Clarence Mackay in Pennsylvania. Works by Haseltine, especially of this magnitude, seldom appear on the market.
