About the Item

With right foot resting on a set of bellows and hands holding cymbals, on integrally cast circular plinth. The Hellenistic marble on which this bronze is based was moved from Rome to Florence by the Medici in 1688 and placed in the Uffizi where it is now in the Tribuna. It was first recorded in 1665 when Albert Ruben's book on Roman costumes was published. However the marble, long considered to have been restored by Michelangelo had probably been moved from Rome to Florence by the middle of the sixteenth century. A document of 1556 alludes to its belonging to Euralio Silvestri whose collection passed to a branch of the Medici family and a painting of 1564, now lost, by Allori is reported to have shown the Uffizi faun.
