Large Wood Sculpture of Boddhisatva Head Ming Dynasty

About the Item

Large antique Chinese carved wood sculpture of a Boddhisattva head circa 16-17th century from Ming Dynasty. Likely part of a full body life-size statue, the head was finely carved, painted with polychrome color (the remnants are discernible) and likely inlaid with a precious stone on his forehead. The surface was quite weathered now and exhibits a deep patina from the age. The Bodhisattvas is known as Avalokitesvara in Sanskrit. In China, his identify took a cultural transformation and became Guanyin (the one who detects the sounds of the world), who is worshipped for her compassion and mercy for those in the sufferings. The fine feature of the Bodhisattva shows a clear India/Central Asia influence with slightly hooked nose, a full face with elevated cheekbones, high brows, upward eyelid, downcast eyes and a faint smile on his lips. The crown with scrolling edges and hair was rendered in fine details. The patinated surface particularly accentuate the serenity of his facial expression. Mounted (not fixed) on a custom-made tired black wood stand.
