About the Item

Origin: Tampa Florida, USA Period: Oligocene 25 to 38 million years ago Agatite Coral is produced when silica in the ocean water hardens, replacing limestone corals with a form of quartz known as Chalcedony. This long process results in the formation of a “pseudomorph”, which means that one mineral has replaced another without having lost its original form. The name “agatized coral” alludes to its origin, in which chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) has replaced the coral. The few collection localities of agatized quartz include Florida and West Virginia. The oldest fossil corals are from the Ordovician period, more than 450 million years old. Our collection features an Agatized Coral cut and polished on a rectangular acrylic base, revealing both the internal composition of the coral and its external structure. Each piece is unique and originally designed by Pietra Gallery to captivate and delight natural history lovers. By fusing this coral with modern materials, we create an exceptional and unique piece of object art that merges the past with the present in an innovative design. This combination offers a distinctive and unique touch that can transform any space, making it a point of conversation and admiration.
