Decorated "Bambini" pottery, 1930s, Manifattura Lenci, Italy

About the Item

Lenci is a company founded in 1919, in Turin, by Enrico Scavini. Initially it was involved in the production of dolls, furniture and baby furniture, but also in a particular fabric now known as "pannolenci." In 1927 the company added a line of ceramic figures and objects to its production. The proposed object depicts a little girl holding a doll and a baby with a teddy bear, sitting close together on a stone wall, probably intent on singing. The pictorial decoration is very concise: flat, even color fields with small polka dots on a white background in the dress of the little girl and the puppet. The faces, in contrast, are well detailed: large eyes emphasized by long eyelashes and red cheeks. Total measurements are 13.8x12.5x5.7 cm, made of ceramic and painted with glazes. The work was confirmed by Dr. di Stefania Cretella in May 2021. On the bottom is a stamp reading, "Lenci - Turin - Made in Italy" and written in pen "CR59." The state of preservation is excellent.
