Fossilized Horse Leg. Equus Sp., Pleistocene, Florida, USA

About the Item

A fossilized horse leg. Equus sp., Pleistocene, Florida, USA This set of fossil horse bones dates from an extinct equine. The inter-locking bones are elegantly presented in a vertical orientation held in place with a black metal armature on a wood base. The umber colored bones, dating back some 40 million years, are well-preserved. It is a truly interesting specimen to be sure, and the ancient leg offers some insight into the anatomy of the early ancestor of the modern horse. Smaller than the contemporary horses of today, which is apparent from these fossilized leg bones, Equus lived in herds and was extinct in North America by the end of the Pleistocene ("Ice Age"). Measures : The wood box:40x44x24 cm and bones 40 cm large.
