Miocene Period Fossilized Sand Dollar or Sea Biscuit Very Large

About the Item

This attractive example of a Madagascar fossilized sand dollar is expertly cleaned and polished to retain the endoskeleton (outer shell) preserving excellent definition and details. With honey colored tones and soft edges it is a fascinating and beautiful specimen. It is an Echinoid fossil of the genus Clypeaster and also know as a sea biscuit or cake urchin. Then genus first appeared in the late Eocene period (56 to 33.9 million years ago). Eocene is an ancient Greek word for dawn or new. The Eocene geophysical period refers to beginning of modern fauna that appeared during the period. When we first started collecting fossilized sand dollars, the method of retaining the endoskeleton in the cleaning process was not yet discovered and the available specimens were a buff color with a sandy rough texture. They appealed on a different level.
