About the Item

A mid 18th century Grand Tour white statuary marble relief of a Roman emperor, possibly Augustus Caesar, presented on a custom-made steel stand as pictured. Deeply carved in relief, this antique bust is to be celebrated for its good quality carving, the emperor’s facial features clear and distinctive after more than 270 years. Originating from Italy, this piece was likely acquired by a collector as part of an adventurous 18th century Grand Tour. Today, it is a superb collector’s piece, showcasing original makers marks to the reverse and a paper label inscribed ‘A. and M. Coleridge Collection’ (pictured). Provenance Ex. collection of Kenneth Neame, London antiques dealer. After studying architecture at Cambridge, Neame began his career as an antiques dealer. He opened his first shop in Handel’s House, Brook Street, Mayfair and it soon became a must-visit destination for clients staying at the nearby Claridges. In 1990, the business relocated to Mount Street before finally closing after seven decades of acquiring antiques for an array of prestigious clients. His remaining stock came onto the market, some of which previously formed part of his own private collection at his home in Cadogan Square, London. Tenerani Statuary Marble Bust of a Young Augustus Caesar
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
A finely carved statuary white marble bust of a young Augustus Caesar attributed to the workshops of 19th century Italian sculptor Pietro Tenerani (1789-1869). Also known as Young Octavian, this bust of a young Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar is after a sculpture found in the Pio Clementino Museums of the Vatican. Carved with exceptional detail, the bust is elevated on a turned socle and bears the name ‘TENERANI’ to the front. Other busts like this one after the Vatican original of the former Emperor Augustus were sculpted in the Mid-18th Century. Pietro Tenerani (1789-1869) was a notable Italian sculptor of the early 19th century. In his early career, he trained under Italian sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini, before moving to Rome where he won a scholarship as a pupil of Danish sculptor, Bertel Thorvalsden. Having honed his skills, Tenerani worked from a studio of his own in later years. William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire, Queen Victoria and Pope Pius IX...
