Large Black Forest Stag Trophy on Carved Plaque - Germany 1937
A large uneven 8 pointer red deer (Cervus elaphus) trophy from the Oberpfalz in Bavaria mounted on a dark stained wooden plaque. The trophy was shot in 1937. The place and date of the hunt are noted in handwriting on the skull.
Trophies are mementos from the hunted game, which are kept by the huntsmen as a souvenir or decorative item. For many centuries it was a tradition to collect trophies. Nowadays exactly these are becoming more and more popular as decorative highlights in hunting lodges.
