About the Item

Marble tabletop decorated in the center with a mosaic of concentric friezes featuring plant and geometric motifs. The central medallion, made of hard stone micromosaics, depicts Apollo with a lyre. There is a slight difference in level between the medallion and the rest of the decoration; this difference could indicate that the work on the medallion predates the rest of the mosaic decoration. The posture of the deity and the handwork evoke a Mannerist style. Micromosaics are a true masterpiece of craftsmanship, as impressive in the 18th and 19th centuries as they remain today. Inspired by the art of ancient mosaics, Italian workshops of the post-Baroque period perfected this technique using tiny tesserae assembled with extreme precision. Highly prized by travelers on the Grand Tour, these works often depicted Italian monuments, particularly Roman ones, and made ideal souvenirs, decorative, durable, and typically Roman. Due to their weight and the time required to make them, small objects (jewelry, snuff boxes) were more common, while large pieces, such as tabletops, were rare and highly sought-after.
