Antique Large Carved Oak Figure of Saint Anthony of Padua, 18th-19th Century
Located in New York, NY
Fine hand carved oak figure of Saint Anthony of Padua
Late 18th- Early 19th Century
Saint Anthony is depicted with his head raised, mouth ajar, as if in the process of speaking. He stands upright wearing his traditional Franciscan robes and holding open a book. Beautifully carved with high level of detail, unusual for oak pieces. Oak is a dense hardwood which is difficult to carve and it's rare to see this level of detail in an early oak sculpture.
Saint Anthony is the Patron Saint of lost things. While living at the monastery, he had a treasured book which contained psalms and personal observations. His book was stolen by a man who decided to leave the monastery and Anthony ferverently prayed for its return as the cost of a new book would have been beyond his means. The thief repented and returned the book which is believed to be preserved at the Franciscan Library in Bologna. He is one of the most popular Catholic saints...

Limonaire Organ Figure, circa 1880
Located in London, GB
Antique Limonaire organ figure from Paris, circa 1880
This very rare artefact is originally believed to be from a 52-key ‘De Gouden Limonaire’ (The Golden Limonaire) this highly collectable French organ figure is in overall wonderful condition for its age. The figure is made from sectioned pieces of hand carved wood and painted with polychrome layered surfaces (this item has been painted a few times over time as expected, the layers can be seen in the worn and faded sections of this item). The figure comes with its original base, made with wood and layered with velvet. This item is completely secure in stature. Quite simply this is a very rare and wonderfully quirky decorative original 52 – Key De Gouden Limonaire carved organ figure from Paris.
Limonaire History: The firm of Limonaires Freres (Limonaire Brothers) was also an early entry into the organ business, founded in 1840. From the late 1890’s most organs were of the “book” system, although some paper roll or “keyless” models were made. Organs of the early 20th century were sold under the “Orchestronphone” trade name. In the 1900-1910 era, Limonaire sold different models with elaborate facades that often were incorporated into a ticket booth or large Bioscope show front on amusement rides. Peek production occurred during 1900 to 1914. Linonaire had a factory in Paris and also one in Waldkirch, Germany. Limonaire also produced a line of instruments called “Jazzbandophone” that had ornate facades with heavy carving and figures even on the small size instruments. Most of these Jazz instruments have a very mellow sweet tone which makes Limonaire among the best fairground organs...
