About the Item
Rare and fine pair of decorative columns in neoclassical style, made in the first quarter of the 19th century, probably in the Austro-Venetian area. The work presents a composite structure of great formal balance: the shaft, carved entirely in alabaster with slight vertical grooves, rests on a square ebonized wooden base (10 x 10 cm), with a molded plinth gilded with gold leaf. The capital recalls the Corinthian model, with rich carved volutes and floral details, also gilded in leaf. Particularly curious and decorative is the presence in the center of the capital of a small projecting zoomorphic element, vaguely resembling a stylized eagle's head, which enriches its ornamental layout. The top of each column is closed by a double spherical element: a larger alabaster sphere topped by a smaller one made of gilded wood, with a decorative function and probably designed as an end piece. The ensemble suggests original use as side pieces of furniture, perhaps intended to flank a mantel clock or used as supports for small lamps or decorative urns. Height 35 cm.Base 10 x 10 cm.
