  • Ancient Egyptian Predynastic Flint Fish-Tail Knife
    Located in London, GB
Ancient Egyptian Flint Knife Predynastic period, Naqada I-II, 4th millennium B.C. Flint This exquisite fish-tail knife is an extraordinary example of Predynastic flint workmanship. The blade is thin and tactile with delicate saw-like teeth. The V- or fishtail-shaped side would have been used as its cutting surface, most likely to sever the umbilical cord of a new-born baby. Such knives were placed in tombs throughout the Predynastic Period to assist their owner’s rebirth in the afterlife, probably due to their association with childbirth rituals. The fishtail blade is thought to be the predecessor of the pesesh-kef knife, a similar implement which, from the time of the Old Kingdom...

  • 'Elephant' original African Shona stone sculpture Zimbabwe
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
This small and intimate sculpture of an elephant is a heartfelt and doting example of the sculpture of the Shona artists of Zimbabwe, but also demonstrates the clever use of the texture of the stone. The sculpture is stylized, though more naturalistic than many of the sculptures of the Shona artists. The elephant leans backward and reaches its trunk into the air. The use of texture on its body is ingenious, using a series of crossing lines to create a rough surface that mimics the appearance of real elephant skin, adding a lifelike effect to the stationary stone. Unknown Shona artist 'Elephant,' late 20th century springstone 4.5 x 3.87 x 1.63 inches Overall excellent condition; some minor surface abrasions Shona artists and crafts people have been working in different media for generations. These include paintings, pottery, basket ware, wood carvings, and sculpture done in metal as well as the stone carvings. While there is not a long standing tradition of sculpture in what is now Zimbabwe (formerly Southern Rhodesia), stone carvings dating from the 15th century were seen in Great Zimbabwe, an excavated temple near Bulawayo. Most of the artifacts from this location have been moved to museums in Cape Town, South Africa or London. It is generally agreed that Zimbabwean stone sculpture...

  • Chinese Scholar Rock Black Taihu Stone on Wood Stand
    Located in Atlanta, GA
This is a slender Taihu scholar rock in an upright form displayed on a custom carved stand. Wonderful and well-balanced form, the rock has a near mirage image between the front and the back. It is of a grayish black color with white and yellow deposits nicely mixed into the residual deposits from the erosion. The surface has been deeply polished and weathered and is now mostly smooth yet still maintains some slightly rugged edges and points at places. Many grottoes puncture and permeate the piece, interlinking and window-like, creating interesting negative spaces for a meditative mind. Stones such as this from Taihu lake was among the four famous stones since ancient time in China. They have been collected and prized by Chinese scholars since Tang dynasty when using them in garden came in vogue. Later on, smaller pieces like this one were displayed in the scholar's private study serving as a mini form...
