19th Century Shell Money Bracelets
A set of 8, probably African, Shell Money bracelets. For centuries, up until the mid-1800s, these type of shells were used as payment throughout Western Africa. Similar money shells were used in Island populations as in New Guinea. This set is wonderfully patined and mounted on custom made stands. The largest ones are circa 12 cm high and the smallest circa 9 cm high. The stands of the 4 smaller ones are 1 cm lower (4 cm). So in total they are circa 16 cm high with stand (base 7 x 7). These are also sold separately.
