About the Item

Aletai Meteorite Fragment Mounted in a Custom Acrylic Display Box Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China This specimen is a fragment of the Aletai meteorite, one of the largest known iron meteorites ever recorded on Earth. Originally discovered in 1898 in China’s Xinjiang region, it was long believed to be an isolated mass known as the Armanty meteorite. This was the only known piece for more than a century—until the early 21st century, when additional fragments were unearthed across the region. Scientific analysis eventually revealed that these scattered masses shared a common origin, and in 2016, the parent body was formally reclassified and named the Aletai meteorite. This redefinition united the fragments as pieces of a once-massive, singular celestial body—likely broken apart upon impact with Earth. Composed primarily of nickel-iron alloy, the Aletai meteorite displays the dense metallic structure and surface characteristics typical of iron meteorites, including regmaglypts (thumbprint-like impressions) and a natural patina acquired over millennia of exposure. The specimen is housed in a custom-designed acrylic display box, offering a clean, archival-quality presentation that underscores its significance as both a scientific relic and a cosmic artifact. Provenance: Meteorite Name: Aletai Composition: Iron (Ni-Fe alloy) Discovery: First found in 1898 (as Armanty); reclassified in 2016 Origin: Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China Mount: Custom archival acrylic box with floating display
