About the Item

A large natural pyrite specimen originating from Peru, sourced from the ex private collection of a Scottish professor. This mineral has a lustrous exterior that catches the light beautifully with its unique well-terminated cube like crystals and good quality scale, making for an impressive sculptural piece in any property. Naturally formed over millions of years, this striking mineral specimen showcases a distinctive golden colour, typical of pyrite, for which its metallic lustre is famously named ‘Fool’s Gold’. Provenance From the fascinating collection of Gordon Walkden (1944-2022), emeritus Professor of Geology at Aberdeen University. Affectionally known as Aberdeen’s answer to Indiana Jones, Walkden contributed enormously to research through his papers and talks on British marbles, minerals and fossils. Highly respected in his field, Walkden was active throughout his retirement, invited to Windsor Castle to identify marbles used in the Albert Memorial Chapel. This is just one of various specimens we are selling originally from his outstanding collection.
