About the Item

Village stone plaque applied on slate in original frame, Louis XVI period, second half of the 18th century. "Pietra paesina" is a special variety of alberese limestone, found around Florence, consisting of compact limestone and clay with mineralized solutions of iron and manganese. These solutions produce extraordinary designs that appear as rocky landscapes, profiles of distant perched cities, and stormy seas. Generally in works in paesina stone, it is the material itself that is the real protagonist, with its irregular cuts outlining scenery. Its beauty fascinated Grand Duke Ferdinand dei Medici in the 16th century, who included it among the rare and precious lithic materials used by his specialized workshop, the Opificio delle pietre dure. While its use lapses from the mid-17th century onward, it was during the Grand Tour years, at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, that the paesina stone reappeared among the so-called souvenirs, coveted by wealthy European and American travelers for its magical beauty that earned it the name dream stone at the time. Village stone is still quarried today, and it is not easy for the untrained eye to distinguish between ancient and modern objects. Typically, antique versions are often mounted on slate slabs, as was already the case with the clerk, and have an extremely thin thickness, allowed by the fact that they were sanded by hand. Our plaque is still inside its original 18th-century frame with its graceful gilded bronze hook of the period. Frame size 37 x 23 cm
