Two Pieces: The Rock Crystal Quartz Stalagmite and the Carved Silver Leaf Base
Measuring 28 inches in height with a footprint of 13 inches wide by 12 inches deep, this monumental rock crystal sculpture is both a natural specimen and a sculptural design object. The quartz alone stands 19 inches tall and weighs well over 150 pounds, showcasing the raw elegance of mineral formation with a lightly polished surface that retains visible inclusions, striations, and natural fissures.
The crystal is mounted in a two-part carved wood base, finished in silver leaf and stylized to resemble fragmented rock or faceted masonry. The craftsmanship is reminiscent of the work of Serge Roche, the mid-20th-century French designer known for dramatic use of mirrored, plaster, and carved wood furnishings. The base has been hollowed to support the heavy quartz securely, and the surface shows signs of age and patina, with subtle wear to the silver leaf that enhances its sculptural quality.
