About the Item
This piece displays the beauty of the Muonionalusta meteorite in the form of a cube. It is extreamly rare to find a cube of any meteorite above an inch and this piece is 2 inches cubed. Weighing in at almost a kilo!!! Muonionalusta is a meteorite classified as a fine octahedrite which impacted in northern Scandinavia west of the border between Sweden and Finland about one million years BCE. The first Muonionalusta was found in 1906 and it is one of the oldest known meteorites at roughly 4.5 billion years old. This specimen is part of the meteorite's iron core or mantle, which shattered into many pieces upon its fall to our planet. On Earth, it has experienced four ice ages. Mainly comprised of a combination of iron and nickel, the distinct type of etching displayed by the meteorite is known as the Widmanstätten pattern.
