Otter and Loss, Taxidermy in a Glass Machine, London Piccadilly
About the Item
Otter and loss - Taxidermy in a glass machine - London Piccadilly, Rowland Ward Ld. 19th Century.
Taxidermy is the art and process of preserving, mounting, and displaying animal specimens for various purposes, such as scientific study, educational exhibits, or as trophies. The word "taxidermy" is derived from the Greek words "taxis," meaning arrangement, and "derma," meaning skin.
This fine example is from the well known shop of Rowland Ward Ld, located in the number 167 Picadilly in London, UK.
Rowland Ward was born in 1847 and died in 1912, he was born to a family with keen interest in Scientific and Wild Life Preservation, where Taxidermy was a way to display animals who lost their life for their eternal preservation.
Sadly with the demise in 1977 of the Business no longer is possible to commission and apreciate Taxidermy the way it was done on the late XIX Century.

XIX Century Newfoundland Labrador Sculpture (Devezas Ceramics)
Located in Lisboa, PT
The Newfoundland Labrador dog, commonly referred to as the Newfoundland or Newfie, is a large and strong breed known for its gentle and sweet nature. It originated from the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, where it was originally bred as a working dog for tasks such as hauling fishing nets, pulling carts, and rescuing people from water.
Key characteristics of the Newfoundland breed include its massive size, with males typically weighing between 130-150 pounds (59-68 kg) and females between 100-120 pounds (45-54 kg). They have a thick double coat that is water-resistant, which helps them excel in water activities and also provides protection in cold climates. The coat can come in various colors, including black, brown, gray, and Landseer (white with black markings).
Newfoundlands are known for their gentle and calm demeanor, making them excellent family pets and great with children. They are often described as "gentle giants" due to their patient and affectionate nature. Despite their size, they are generally good-natured and friendly with strangers and other animals.
These dogs require regular grooming due to their thick coats, and they also need moderate exercise to stay healthy and happy. They enjoy activities like swimming, hiking, and participating in water sports. Additionally, early socialization and training are important to ensure they grow up to be well-behaved companions.
Overall, the Newfoundland Labrador dog is a beloved breed known for its loyalty, gentle nature, and versatility in various roles, from family pet to working dog.
