Pair of Italian Cameo 19th Century Carved Conch Shells

About the Item

A pair of Victorian cameo carved conch shells depicting Medusa. The scene is delicately carved in varying degrees of relief, with the foreground carved in the highest relief to the background carved in the lowest relief, against a background of contrasting color. Since the late 19th century, the species most used in good-quality cameos has been the bullmouth helmet, the upper shell layer is whitish, and the lower shell layer is a rich creamy brown. After 1850, demand for such cameos carvings grew and they became popular souvenirs of the grand tour in Italy and France. This is a beautiful decor for shelves, coffee tables, desks, entry tables and more. These elegant shells bring a breath of the beach to your interior.
