Important, Rare Pair Art Deco Polynesian-Themed Sculptures or Lamps by Powell
About the Item
Beautifully modelled, molded and glazed, this pair of sculptures was originally designed to serve as tabletop torchere lamps, with light washing the wall above, and lighting the eyes of each head. Very finely crafted, the sculptures were made by Doane Powell, an important Nebraska cartoonist and illustrator who later became famous for the masks he made of celebrities such as Mae West, Governor Huey Long of Louisiana, and Greta Garbo. Powell made both realistic portraits as well as caricatures, and exhibited his work at the Century of Progress Exposition, in Chicago, in 1933. He had moved to New York in the 1920s, and his mask-making business flourished, with masks commissioned for theater productions, department store displays, movies and television, and advertising campaigns. In 1948, Powell wrote an authoritative volume, "Masks and How to Make Them," which revealed that he made his masks from laminated paper, adhesive and sometimes silk.

- "Exchange of Cultures, " High Style Art Deco Porcelain Lamp Base w/ Nudes by RobjBy ROBJLocated in Philadelphia, PAIllustrated in "Ceramiche Robj" and considered a major design by the renowned sculptor and ceramicist, this large piece was probably made in early 1930s to coincide with the debut of the Exposition Coloniale Internationale in Paris, which attracted almost 9 million visitors in less than a year. Rare and striking, this porcelain table lamp base depicts the globe surmounted by a tightly composed cluster of nude and semi-nude female figures representing cultures around the world. The women depicted here, all glazed in a gorgeous snow-white glaze highlighted in gold, are clearly representing a range of nations in Asia and Africa, probably coinciding with the nations that were part of the French Colonial Empire in the 1930s, before they won their freedom. Much like the one surviving building from the Exposition, now the Cité nationale de l'histoire de l'immigration, which features a massive bas relief mural...Category

- French Art Deco Opalescent Glass Table or Desk Lamp with Stylish Bison SculptureBy Edmond EtlingLocated in Lisse, NLRare and stylish bison sculpture lampby EDMOND ETLING. This beautiful and truly artistic Art Deco table lamp comes with the signature "Etling France" and model number. Edmond Laurent Etling (23 June 1878 – around 1940) was a French art dealer, gallery owner, designer and a manufacturer of high-quality decorative objects made of bronze, ceramics and art glass in the Art Deco style. His company La Societe Anonyme Edmond Etling, founded in Paris in 1909, manufactured decorative objects and commissioned sculptors and artists, including Georges Béal, Demétre Chiparus, Claire Colinet, Armand Godard, Geneviève Granger, Marcel Guillard, Maurice Guiraud-Rivière, Géza Hiecz, Fanny Rozet, and Lucille Sévin. Other artists that worked with Etling for casting their statuettes included Aurore Onu, Marcel Bouraine, Pierre Le Faguays, Raymonde Guerbe and André Vincent Becquerel. Etling is known for light blue opalescent objects such as plates and bowls, which were also produced in gray and frosted glass. Most items bore the cast signature "Etling France" followed by a model number related to the Choisy-le-Roi catalogue. In 1910, Etling was awarded the diplome d'honneur at Brussels International (1910). In 1923, he was awarded the Grand Prix in Paris. In 1940, Etling closed his shop due to World War II. Because Etling was of Jewish descent, he was sent to a Nazi concentration camp, where he died. This early 1900s, sculptural table lamp clearly has many typical bison features making it easy to tell from further away as well. The overal design and opalescent colors of this bison on a hand carved wooden base makes this work of lighting art an absolute joy to own and look at. And with the light switched on, this art glass table lamp creates a warm light that makes every room an even greater pleasure to be in. This is the ideal light for a (private) library or for a desk, but this bison sculpture beauty also makes a great gift. This work of art table lamp is rewired to the highest standard for safe and immediate usage the world over and when purchased by an American client we will also attach an American power plug so it can be used and enjoyed upon arrival. Mind you, our price for this rare light includes perfect packing (in a custom made and strengthened box) and also worldwide shipping from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. Maximum height x width x depth including wooden base: 7.7 x 9 x 4.8 inches. Height x width x depth of the glass bison...Category
