About the Item
The Avro Shackleton was a British long-range maritime patrol aircraft used by the Royal Air Force. It was developed by Avro from the Avro Lincoln bomber, but with a new fuselage. The Shackleton’s main task was maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare. The plane is named after the polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.
During most of the Shackleton’s working life the Soviet Navy was still reliant on diesel-electric submarines, which had to deploy their schnorkel device for about 20 minutes every few hours to recharge their on-board systems. The maritime reconnaissance task was to search a patrol area with radar so as to detect a submarine during this relatively short schnokelling period.
