Korean Bronze Bottle Goryeo Dynasty
About the Item
An antique Korean bronze bottle of bulbous pear form with a long neck and flared open mouth from Goryeo Dynasty (918 AD-1392 AD) circa 12-13th century It was thought that the type of bottle with such harmonious form and proportion was inspired from the Chinese porcelain prototype "Yu Hu Chun" (Jade Jar Spring) and were commonly found among mortuary objects in the tomb of Goryeo period. Theory is divided in terms of their use. One school thinks they were exclusively used in ritual setting such as flower offering vases in Buddhist temple. The other school thinks they also serve some secular purposes. The metal analysis of these types of bottles shows significant content of lead, which suggests that they were probably not used for culinary functions.
The bottle is striking in its minimalistic elegant form. Its surface is most unadorned othering than two decorative circumventing lines under its neck and above the base. The base was cast separately, and the joins shows expected corrosion consistent with the making process. What is really visually striking is the deep green-bluish encrusted patina that has developed due to the prolonged exposure to earth elements in the ground. That renders the piece a very attractive and archaistic appeal.
For reference of analysis of these bottles, see page 108 of "Korean Art and Design" by Beth McKillop.

View AllKorean Caledon Vase Bottle with Kintsugi Repair Goryeo Dynasty
Located in Atlanta, GA
A ceramic wide-mouthed bottle vase covered in green celadon glaze from Goryeo dynasty circa 11-12th century. The bottle vase with such a form (mouth with wide rim, long and slender neck, tall body with swelled shoulders that taper down toward the base) is known as "kwanggubyong" in Korean and developed from the prototype of bottles from united Silla kingdom. It was used for holding oil or liquid. Some of this type of vase take a plain form without much decoration other than glaze; Some feature basic geometrical lines, such as this one. Three concentric rings were featured along the neck and on the shoulder. Some with more carving on the body (see a vase in the collection of Brooklyn Musuem, 79.246.3) or a simple paint with iron glaze (See c.16-1930 in Fitzwilliam Musuem, Cambridge, UK).
The vase on offer is covered in a lovely green celadon glaze which exhibits fine even crackles throughout the surface. It has a slightly uneven base with the foot ring shaved by the potter. The surface is original with a nice mellow patina. There is a historical kintsugi repair on the mouth rim, with its gold vain...

An exquisite pair of Korean bronze pedestal offering bowls, Goryeo Dynasty, 13th-15th century, Korea.
The Goryeo bronze bowls of generous proportions, with high sides and an ever so slightly everted rim. The bowls are supported on a pedestal base with a tall stem and wide, splayed ring foot.
The bowls plain, save for a single engraved line circumscribing the splayed foot.
The bowls with an amazingly rich and complex patina of mottled reddish browns from cuprite and dark greens from malachite. The bronze heavily cleaned to the European taste, removing most of the encrustations. Some areas of the bowls with rougher areas where the accretions could not be removed.
Crafted in two parts in the spun bronze technique, then joined. The bowls are unusually thin for bronze, with the lathe lines still visible to the undersides.
