About the Item

Vintage Scandinavian Modern clear glass bottles with embossed motif of bull were designed by Erik Höglund and made by Boda (later Kosta Boda) of Sweden in 1960s. The bottles are influenced by traditional Nordic glass bottles; an extra ridge of glass with double curve to the shoulder, formed by a second gather of glass added to the body of the case bottle using a technique known as the half-post method, is not uncommon in antique Scandinavian glass. Both bottles are signed and numbered on the bottoms. Erik Höglund (1932–1998) was a renowned Swedish glass designer. He developed his own distinctive style in the 1950s, with simple, sculptural, and primordial shapes that were often inspired by primitive culture and antique folk glass art; his pieces were heavy and rustic, created without sharp edges or defined flat surfaces. After only one year at Boda, the Swedish National Museum purchased several of his pieces for a big exhibition devoted to Swedish glass. In 1957 Höglund received the Danish Lunning Prize. He designed for Kosta Boda until 1973, started his own smithery, then returned to glass design in 1980s and worked for smaller glassworks in Sweden, such as Pukeberg, Transjö, Åhus, and Vrigstad. In 1981 he taught at Pilchuck, an international center for glass art education in the USA, and in the early 1990s he designed colored glass for the Nový Bor glassworks in the Czech Republic.
