About the Item

Jacob Petit (1796–1868) Pair of 19th-Century Rococo Revival Porcelain Vases This pair of mid-19th-century porcelain vases was produced by the French porcelain manufacturer Jacob Petit, one of the most innovative figures in 19th-century decorative arts. Petit was widely recognized for his revival of Rococo forms and for the vivid, elaborate style that defined his manufactory from the 1830s until his death in 1868. The vases are modeled in baluster form, raised on four scroll feet with outward scroll handles accented by beaded ornament. The decoration combines hand-painted floral sprays with raised and gilt acanthus scrolls and shell cartouches, while the reverse sides feature birds amidst gilded foliage. Each vase rests on a conforming footed stand, completing the Rococo Revival design. Jacob Petit's porcelains are represented in major collections, including the Musée National de Céramique, Sèvres, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris. This pair reflects the distinctive Romantic-era interpretation of Rococo ornament that made Petit one of the most sought-after porcelain makers of his time. Condition: The pair remains in good overall condition. There is age-related wear to the gilding and a small chip noted to one vase, consistent with use and display. These elements are characteristic of authentic 19th-century porcelain and do not detract from the presence of the pieces.
