19th-Century French Glazed Earthenware Jar

About the Item

A striking 19th-century French earthenware water jar with a rich, timeworn surface and expressive form. This traditional utilitarian vessel was likely made in the southwest of France and used to carry and store water or wine. It features a bulbous body with a central neck, dual side spouts, and small looped handles for easy lifting and pouring. The original dark olive glaze has aged beautifully, revealing layers of texture and mineral deposits that speak to its long history and everyday use. The surface shows areas of glaze loss, revealing the warm terracotta beneath—evidence of its authenticity and rustic charm. An evocative decorative accent for farmhouse kitchens, Mediterranean interiors, or collectors of antique pottery, this piece brings with it the quiet poetry of French rural life.
