About the Item

A striking large terracotta storage jar from the Holy Land, dating to the Iron Age, circa 1200–1000 BC. The vessel is hand-formed in a rounded globular shape, with a short cylindrical neck and two opposing lug handles. Its organic contours and pared-down form evoke a timeless sculptural quality, bridging the worlds of ancient utility and modernist design. The unadorned surface, weathered with age, carries a warm, tactile patina that speaks to millennia of history while simultaneously recalling the minimalist aesthetics of 20th-century masters such as Noguchi or Brancusi. Both functional and sculptural, it embodies the primal beauty of ancient craftsmanship that continues to inspire contemporary design sensibilities. Size: 11 1/2 inches high x 15.1/2 inches width ( 13.1/4 inches with custom display stand) Provenance: Ex NYC collection; previously with Professor Benjamin Dersky, University of Michigan, 1960s–1970s Condition: Minor rim chips, else intact and well-preserved This museum-quality piece offers not only a rare artifact of biblical-era daily life but also a work of art that effortlessly complements modern interiors, appealing equally to antiquities collectors and design connoisseurs.
