Blue Porcelain Mizusashi Jar by Japanese Contemporary Master Artist

About the Item

Extraordinary Tea ceremony mizusashi (lidded jar,) stunningly intricately hand painted in underglaze blue, to recreate parts of Choju Giga, or ‘Frolicking Animals’ which is designated as a Japanese National Treasure. Choju Giga is a set of four illustrated scrolls (emakimono) from 12th century (believed to be the work of Toba Soju) and is now exhibited at Kyoto National Museum and Tokyo National Museum. It is considered to be the oldest Japanese manga. The scrolls masterfully use ink lines to depict rabbits, monkeys and frogs demonstrating the human world in a humorous fashion. Some of the rabbits and monkeys are swimming and bathing in a lake, while past the mountains, cliffs and trees are rabbits and frogs making bow and arrows. Mizusashi is a lidded fresh water jar used in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony to replenish the boiling kettle and rinse the tea bowls. First to enter and last to leave the tea ceremony room, the mizusashi serves as a focal point in the aesthetic scheme of an otherwise meditative and somber ceremony with a history that goes back more than ten centuries. This stunning piece is a signed masterpiece by second generation master porcelain artist of the Imari-Arita region of Japan. He is admired for his miniature depiction of scenes of nature and intricate geometric patterns and is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards for his exceptional work and unique contributions to this centuries old art. This breathtaking mizusashi Jar comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 8 in D 5.5 in.
