About the Item

Exceptional Neolithic Chinese Painted Terracotta Storage Jar, 3rd Millennium B.C. A rare and visually arresting terracotta storage jar from Neolithic China, dating to the 3rd millennium B.C. This large piriform vessel is richly adorned with a dramatic cross-hatched geometric motif, possibly symbolizing spiritual or celestial forces. Painted in bold black slip across the upper body, the design is striking in both scale and complexity, framing the curvature of the vessel with commanding visual rhythm. Provenance: Ex Martin Schøyen Collection, London, UK Distinctive piriform (pear-shaped) silhouette with high shoulders and a flared neck Painted slip design possibly representing fertility symbols—motifs often linked to water, transformation, and protection Two loop handles at the equator, typical of utilitarian vessels from this period but here integrated into the overall aesthetic composition Preserved in remarkably good condition with expected surface wear and encrustation consistent with archaeological age Historical Context: This vessel belongs to a tradition of painted pottery from Neolithic China, where such jars were used for grain or water storage, and occasionally for ritual purposes. The decorative language—geometric abstraction with potential zoomorphic elements—points to regional ceremonial practices centered on fertility, the cosmos, and agrarian life. Why It’s Special: Jars of this size and decorative complexity are extremely rare on the open market. The monumental presence, dramatic patterning, and secure provenance position this piece not only as a cultural artifact but as a sculptural object of striking modern appeal. A museum-worthy centerpiece for any serious collector of Asian antiquities or wabi-sabi interiors. Please Note: There may be minor restorations, particularly to the interior, consistent with careful conservation of ancient ceramic vessels.(In handles as well) In addition, the jar exhibits scattered chips, surface abrasions, and small nicks around the body and rim—clearly visible in the accompanying photographs. These age-related imperfections do not detract from the vessel’s visual impact or integrity and are typical of authentic Neolithic earthenware.
