Jan Roest Verhuizingen Breskens Jar
About the Item
Vintage promotional advertising jar with lid is made of glazed ceramics and is decorated with two-tone blue drawing of a ship on a sea. It is marked in blue script on the inner side if the lid. The marks include company logo, company name, Jan Roest Verhuizingen Breskens, and company slogan, "Goede bediening is onze service", that translates from Dutch as "Good service (or good handling) is our service"; Verhuizingen translates as Removal, Migration, or Moving house to change one's home or residence. There is no manufacturer's mark on the bottom of the jar.
The jar appears to be an extremely rare and historical relic of advertisement in transportation; we were unable to find other examples of it mentioned, with very limited promotional items for this company being offered for sale or otherwise described. The company was operating in Netherlands in 1970s.
The jar is in great vintage condition with light signs of wear and a few small chips on the inner rim of the lid, unnoticeable with lid closed, and a small glaze damage on top of the lid. The jar measures 5" wide with 4.2" opening and 1.5" tall; the lid measures 4.56" in diameter and 0.8" tall including bottom rim; jar with the lid on measures 2.5" tall.

Roman Erlikh
Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.

Pisgah Forest Ginger Jar with Lid, North Carolina Art Studio Pottery, 1930s
By North Carolina Pottery
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Beautiful rounded ginger jar with lid features complex green craquelure glaze; the glaze is fluctuating between forest green and deep celadon green hues, is in high gloss finish, and is smooth to the touch. The inner surfaces are finished with semi-gloss off-white glaze.
The jar is in good vintage condition; it is marked and dated on the bottom with one of the earlier, round marks, "N.C. Pisgah Forest West Ashville, Route 19" with the date and potter at the wheel logo (see Kovel's American Art Pottery Marks, p. 149).
Inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement, Walter B. Stephen and his mother began their first pottery, Nonconnah, near Memphis, Tennessee about 1904. Without prior experience, they produced slip-decorated pottery of exceptional merit. Stephen moved to Skyland, North Carolina, in 1913, where he established a second Nonconnah Pottery, the first full-time art pottery in the state. In 1926, Stephen began the operation of his third pottery, Pisgah Forest. Here he explored Oriental glazes and forms, pioneered the first crystalline glazes in the South, and developed his cameo wares which resemble English Wedgewood jasperwares. Pisgah Forest and Nonconnah pottery have gained national recognition from numerous museums and private collectors. Major exhibitions of Stephen’s work have been held at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, the Asheville Art Museum, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Tennessee, American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona, California, the McKissick Museum in Columbia, SC, North Carolina Museum of History, Raleigh, NC, and Southern Highland Craft Guild, Asheville, NC.
