About the Item
It is "Echizen ware".
Echizen is a historic kiln located in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan.
It is said to have originated around the 9th century.
There are 6 kilns with a long history in Japan,
It is one of them.
This large Echizen ware pot was made around 1500.
The period is from the late Muromachi period to the Momoyama period. It is an era older than the Edo period.
Echizen ware from this period is characterized by its smooth skin and dark brown color.
The shape of the pot is slightly ``sloped shoulders'', and the maximum diameter is around the height of the center.
51cm is classified as large size.
Also, large Echizen ware pots are rare and difficult to obtain.
I was lucky enough to get it this time.
However, the condition is that it was once cracked and there are traces of it being glued together.
There is a crack all the way around 20cm from the bottom.
This is because it is split at the top and bottom.
There are also vertical cracks, but these have stopped midway.
All parts are glued, so you don't have to worry about it breaking unless you handle it roughly.
Also, please do not pour water directly into it.
This is one of the most recommended Echizen ware items.
It bakes beautifully and the gradation is stunning.
The smooth skin feels good to the touch, and the shape of the shoulders perfectly expresses Echizen ware.
There is also a mark engraved on the shoulder, which is an important clue to identifying the era.
This mark was used in the 1500s.
As a reference, similar products and marks from the same era as this item were listed in the Japanese art book "Echizen Ware Masterpiece Encyclopedia", so I have attached a photo.
This is a highly recommended item.
