About the Item

Kınık is a traditional Anatolian pottery technique that blends control and chance to create one-of-a-kind designs on the surface of each piece. This small Kınık Küpü was likely used to store or preserve goods, like pekmez, a thick molasses-like syrup that has been sweetening Turkish dishes since the 11th century. . Using an ox horn while the clay is still wet, the Kınık artist drips green, red, and black paint (derived from local minerals: black from crushed stone, green from chrome oxide, red from iron oxide) over each küp while it spins on the potter’s wheel, as gravity pulls the colors down into surprising, distinctive designs. In the mountain village of Kınık, in the region of Bilecik, there are 75 wood-fired kilns and pottery workshops attached to over 300 white-washed cottages. Turkish families pass down the Kınık craft with pride and precision. The mesmerizing, marbled effect of intricate swirls echoes the dynamic interplay of land and sea found along the Marmara coastline. *One-of-a-kind and marked by time, each of these pieces will show patina and natural imperfections. From oil stains to oxidation, we consider these alterations to be portals into a time long ago.

Small Antique Greek Terra Cotta Jar
Located in Dallas, TX
A small pithos (a Greek storage container), this terra cotta jar has well-balanced proportions, with a thin protruding ring just above the widest part of the body. The opening has a lightly rolled rim, adding to the rounded form of the jar. It has a wonderful chalky white finish, with some commensurate losses revealing traces of the original orange hue of the terra cotta, along with areas containing a cream and brown patina. The variegated color enhances the character of this small jar that was once used to store oil or grains. Dating to the early 1900s, our Greek terra cotta...
