About the Item

Large Neolithic Chinese Terracotta Storage Jar with Frog Motif, 3rd Millennium B.C. China, Neolithic Period (circa 3000–2000 B.C.) An exceptional Neolithic terracotta storage vessel, remarkable both for its age and its striking figurative decoration. This piriform (pear-shaped) jar features a painted design depicting stylized frog forms, a rare and culturally significant motif associated with fertility, water, and transformation in early Chinese symbology. The vessel is constructed from hand-coiled clay and finished with bold, geometric black slip decoration applied over the natural reddish surface. Two loop handles are placed symmetrically at the equator, enhancing both the form and function. The surface shows finely preserved pigment, age-related wear, and encrustations consistent with its millennia-old origin. Dimensions: • Height: 14.75 in • Weight: approx. 11 lbs (5 kg) Provenance: Ex West Country, UK private collection, acquired in the 1990s. Condition: Very good antique condition for an object of this age. Minor surface wear, abrasions, and pigment fading consistent with archaeological context. Notable is a small chip on the central body of the vessel (visible in photos). No modern restoration noted.
