About the Item

This large jar is decorated with Chamberlain Worcester's vibrantly colored "Japan" pattern #240, the Best Queen's pattern, and in our opinion, it is the best! It is hand-painted with stylized flowers in typical Imari colors of iron red and cobalt blue embellished with green and gold. Chamberlain Worcester added accents of turquoise, yellow and purple, adding liveliness to the decoration. Why do we love it? The exceptional gilding, the artistry, and the beautiful combination of colors make it one of the finest examples of early 19th-century English porcelain. The pattern is wonderful, the form is lovely, and the size is impressive. It is altogether extraordinary. Made by Chamberlains Worcester in England circa 1810, the hexagonal jar is decorated with three panels that alternate between those with cobalt blue ground and exquisite gilt and those with white ground showing a vibrant green garden with iron red chrysanthemums. One of the three garden panels shows a dragon, a Jabberwocky, a butterfly, and a long-tailed bird. We rarely see this pattern, and when we do, it is usually on much smaller pieces. This is the first time we have seen this pattern on a large jar or vase. Inside the cover, "Chamberlains Worcester" is written in gilt. Dimensions: 19.75" tall x 7.5" across the handles x 5" across the base Condition: Excellent Price: $7,400 History of Chamberlain's Worcester: The painting and gilding of the Chamberlains Worcester factory met the highest standards of porcelain manufacturers during the late 1700s and the early 1800s. So it's no surprise that the factory enjoyed royal patronage due to its excellence. Robert Chamberlain and his son Humphrey were responsible for the decoration and gilding of the porcelains made in the original Worcester factory during the 1770s and 1780s. In 1793 they opened their porcelain factory in Worcester: Chamberlains Worcester. By 1800, the Chamberlains Worcester factory was well established as a leading manufacturer of some of the finest English porcelains.
