About the Item

Over 500 years old, this Byzantine-era, large küp was used to store grains or olive oil by generations of families in the Levant. The barrel-shaped body and small opening at the neck minimize exposure to air, light, and heat, keeping the quality of the oil over time. Olive oil has long been a staple in Turkish pantries, and has brought great economic prosperity to the Anatolia region. From storing abundance to preserving the flavor that marks most Turkish meals, these olive oil küps have held “liquid gold” for Anatolians for centuries. Today, it makes a stunning centerpiece or design anchor in the hallway, entryway, or garden of a modern home. Mut, where this küp was created, is located in Southern Turkey, a small village that lies inland from the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and between the city centers of Adana and Mersin. *One-of-a-kind and marked by time, each of these pieces will show patina and natural imperfections. From oil stains to oxidation, we consider these alterations to be portals into a time long ago.
