About the Item

Neolithic Period, 3rd Millennium B.C. Chinese Painted Terracotta Storage Jar An elegant Chinese terracotta storage jar from the Neolithic period, dating to the 3rd millennium B.C. The vessel features a piriform body with a wide, flaring mouth and two loop handles at the shoulder. The surface is adorned with bold geometric decoration in dark slip, likely depicting stylized frog forms, a motif symbolically associated with fertility, transformation, and water in ancient Chinese visual language. The painted decoration is well-preserved with areas of natural fading and mineral encrustation, which lend the piece a rich and authentic patina. Compact yet impactful in form, this jar demonstrates the refinement and symbolic sophistication of Neolithic ceramic traditions in early China. Provenance: Ex Hong Kong collection, acquired in the 1990s. Condition: There are tiny chips around the rim and some abrasions throughout the body, and surface wear consistent with archaeological age. Signs of restoration are present and very visible, though nothing detracts from its strong visual character. Please refer to images for a detailed view of condition.
