About the Item

Neolithic Chinese Terracotta Storage Jar with Frog Motif, 3rd Millennium B.C. China, Neolithic Period (circa 3000–2000 B.C.) A striking Neolithic terracotta vessel, distinguished by its sculptural form and boldly painted surface. This piriform-bodied storage jar features a rare and expressive frog motif rendered in dark slip, its angular geometry and stylized limbs forming a rhythmic band encircling the upper half of the vessel. These figural representations—believed to symbolize fertility, transformation, and abundance—imbue the piece with both spiritual and aesthetic significance. The vessel is equipped with two loop handles at the equator, offering balance and utility, while the tapering base and flared neck contribute to its graceful proportions. The decoration is complemented by deep natural pigments and a richly developed surface patina formed over millennia. Dimensions: • Height: 12 5/8 in (32 cm) • Approx. Weight: 5 lbs (2.3 kg) Condition: Very good condition for its age, with expected surface wear, minor abrasions, and encrustations consistent with archaeological context. Light restoration identified. Some superficial lines appear does not affect the jar's structural integrity. Provenance: Ex West Country, UK private collection, acquired in the 1990s. A museum-quality example of prehistoric Chinese pottery, notable for its strong visual impact and anthropomorphic symbolism. Ideal for collectors of ancient ceramics or as a sculptural anchor in a refined interior.
