About the Item

This pair of large antique Dutch Delft jars, made circa 1880, features classic blue and white Delft decoration in the "Thousand Flowers" pattern. The decoration presents a continuous scene of a bird perched among dense clusters of stylized flowers and foliage. The fluted, octagonal bodies are gently curved. The fluting adds visual interest as light plays across the curving surfaces. The shoulders are decorated with elegant lappets, while the base, neck, and edges of each cover are finished with traditional geometric stiff-leaf decoration. The covers are topped with traditional leopard finials. The leopard finials are particularly good with lots of character, adding charm to these striking lidded jars. Crafted in the traditional 17th-century Delft style, these pieces make a lovely impression. Dimensions: 18" tall x 7.5" wide Condition: Good. Original spots where the painting slipped off in the kiln (see image #5). Price: $960 **Key Features** - Pair of large lidded Dutch Delft jars - Blue and white Thousand Flowers pattern with birds and foliage - Finials in the form of leopards - Fluted, octagonal bodies reflect light with dynamic texture - Traditional lappet and stiff leaf border designs - Made in the Netherlands circa 1880 Background on Delftware: In the 17th and 18th centuries, Delft potters in the Netherlands developed a distinctive style influenced by imported Chinese porcelain. When Chinese exports declined in the mid-17th century, Dutch potteries filled the demand with their own interpretations, resulting in a flourishing industry centered in the city of Delft.
