About the Item

A decorative pair of Chinese porcelain ginger jars dating to the mid-20th century, finely executed in the Famille Noire palette—an enamel technique revived in homage to Qing Dynasty porcelain, particularly the Tongzhi period (1862–1874). Each jar is hand-painted with a continuous figural and floral composition that encircles the globular form. Against a lustrous black-glazed ground, vivid enamels depict blooming peonies in pink and red tones, nestled among scrolling emerald-green foliage. These auspicious flowers—symbols of honour, prosperity, and romance in Chinese culture—are paired with figures dressed in traditional robes, evoking scenes of scholarly life or courtly leisure. The design is further enriched at the shoulder and neck with stylised chrysanthemums and gilded leaf motifs, referencing themes of longevity and renewal. Measuring 16 cm in height and 13.5 cm in diameter, both jars retain their original proportions and are presented in good vintage condition, with only light wear to the enamel surfaces consistent with age and use. A compelling example of 20th-century Chinese decorative arts, blending historic motifs with bold visual contrast.
