About the Item

This set of large Turkish jugs was used to store and serve liquids, likely wine, to generations of families in the Levant. Wine production in Anatolia can be traced back to the Hittites: ancients who called the region home from 1600-1200 BCE. They fermented and stored wine in large clay küps. Local techniques (for wine production and the pottery to store it in) were passed down through many different empires and ages, and heavily influenced by Greek settlers who moved to the region. Today, Anatolian winemaking is experiencing a revival and some modern wine producers are reintroducing küps for fermentation and aging, both for the sake of tradition and for the unique flavor profiles these vessels add to the wine. The küps are from Çanakkale: a prominent Aegean wine region, situated between the Aegean and Marmara Seas, with fertile lands and a favorable climate that makes it ideal for viticulture. Çanakkale neighbors the ancient city (and modern archeological site) of Troy. We like to imagine that the küps produced in Çanakkale carried fine wine to the banquet tables of Troy, where mythological tales were told over long evenings. *One-of-a-kind and marked by time, each of these pieces will show patina and natural imperfections. From oil stains to oxidation, we consider these alterations to be portals into a time long ago.
