About the Item
This large Turkish jug was used to store and serve liquids, likely wine, to generations of families in the Levant.
Wine production in Anatolia can be traced back to the Hittites: ancients who called the region home from 1600-1200 BCE. They fermented and stored wine in large clay küps. Local techniques (for wine production and the pottery to store it in) were passed down through many different empires and ages, and heavily influenced by Greek settlers who moved to the region. Today, Anatolian winemaking is experiencing a revival and some modern wine producers are reintroducing küps for fermentation and aging, both for the sake of tradition and for the unique flavor profiles these vessels add to the wine.
This küp is from Balıkesir, a city in northwestern Turkey known for its rich history and cultural heritage. The region features stunning landscapes, including the Kaz Mountains (mythologically known as Mount Olympus: home of the gods) and beautiful beaches along the Aegean and Marmara coasts. Balıkesir is also famous for its thermal springs and olive oil production. Local crafts include intricate weaving and pottery.

Sırlı Küp (Turkish Glazed Jar - Medium)
Located in Ojai, US
This medium glazed küp was likely used to store cheese by generations of families in the Levant. The design is similar to jugs used to carry water, wine, or other liquids (as cheese is traditionally stored in its brine). Glazing, a traditional technique on pottery wheels in Konya and Isparta, is as functional as it is beautiful. The glaze provides a protective and hygienic layer, making these objects optimal vessels for storing food staples and preserving delicacies.
Cheese is a staple in most Turkish breakfasts today, with a fascinating history springing from the Fertile Crescent: the region of Southwest Asia that includes portions of present-day Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Around 8000 BCE, the first humans to keep livestock began firing pottery that could store dairy products in the warm climate. In this process, they discovered that they could use ceramic strainers...
