About the Item

These antique copper containers were hand made in Spain for common household purposes, but with their sculptural forms, rich colors and patina of age they surpass their rough beginnings to become things of beauty. All three show evidence of use, some period repairs, and a characteristic geometric, zig-zagging "dovetail seam" where two pieces of copper were "cramped" or hammered together while molten brass was dripped into the seam and smoothed over to strengthen the joint. The smallest has an incised cross mark, and the largest has a stamped fleur-de-lis mark. The significance of this mark being on this pitcher is unknown, and though it is a heraldic symbol used widely throughout Europe, in Spain the fleur-de-lis has been associated with both the House of Bourbon royal family and the Catholic religion (often representing the Holy Trinity). The third container has visible period repairs and a second small handle, to assist in either scooping water or pouring.

Copper containers of varying shapes and sizes have been used in Spanish homes and kitchens for many centuries. This particular jug, most likely made for the storage and serving of liquids such as water or milk, exhibits strong Hispano-Moresque influences. The baluster shape, symmetrical wing-like handles, and fitted, domed lid all reference Spanish Arab...
