Antique early 20th century Dutch Delft Iznik Style Earthenware Jug ca 1910
About the Item
A small, beautifully shaped spherical jug with a slightly tapering neck by De Porceleyne Fles. Dated between 1910–1930, it belongs to the 'Nieuw Delfts' series, inspired by ceramics from the Middle and Near East (the Iznik style). The designs (also referred to as Old Persian) were created by Leon Senf. Characteristic of this intricate series are the warm tones—as opposed to traditional Delft blue—the crackle effect, and the running and blending of the glaze colors. This piece features a tricolor palette of red, turquoise, and blue.
The jug is decorated with blue tulips and red flowers, and a floral band motif is applied to both the neck and the footring. The handle is adorned with a painted decoration resembling the neck of an ibis-like bird.
