Early 20th Century Korean Cast Iron Footed Mortar

About

Since ancient times, apothecaries around the world have been using mortar and pestles like this one to grind medicinal herbs. This finely crafted and sculptural vessel was cast in iron in the early 1900s and would have been indispensable to a Korean doctor in preparing remedies for indigestion, high fevers, headaches and other maladies. With its rustic finish and sculptural form, this mortar makes for a striking vessel, perfect as a planter or jardinière.
