Georgian mahogany coopered brass bound plate bucket or pail
About the Item
Georgian mahogany coopered plate bucket pail, brass bound, with folding cast brass bow carrying handle, now with tole (metal) liner of later date.
English circa 1780 - 1800.
The long passages which frequently separated kitchen and dining room in eighteenth century homes made the carrying of plates a formidable task for servants. To facilitate transport, mahogany pails were produced, the open section to enable the plates to be readily handled.
In 1769, Chippendale’s firm supplied Sir Edward Knatchbull with ‘a neat mahogany plate basket with brass bow handle.’
This bucket is of excellent quality and original colour. With the metal liner it can be used as a waste paper basket or plant jardiniere.

This is a very rare, ironstone Two Handled, Ice Pail or Wine Cooler Pot, made by Mason's Patent Ironstone China Company, of Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, circa 1818.
This piece is substantial and heavily potted, weighing about 2.2 Kg un-packed.
The pot is circular with 12 vertical sections, sitting on a low foot with an everted rim. The two side handles are strongly potted and this piece is quite suitable for use or display, as an ice bucket, wine bottle cooler or perhaps as a vase or centre piece.
