Joseph Cliff & Sons Large Terracotta Garden Urn

About the Item

An intricately crafted and beautifully preserved large terracotta garden urn by Joseph Cliff & Sons, circa 1890. Standing proudly on a plinth, it looks striking amongst the gardens or courtyard of a country estate, the design instilling a sense of grandeur and majesty. It has a pale yellow colour and is highly detailed, decorated with a mysterious bearded mask on two sides, shell embellishments and wreaths to the base. Whether planted with flowers or used alone, this antique terracotta urn is a handsome object of statuary for traditionally styled gardens. Joseph Cliff & Sons This antique terracotta urn is stamped with a marker’s mark reading ‘Joseph & Son, Wortley’. Established in 1795, Joseph Cliff & Son’s Fire Clay Works were renowned brick and pipe makers of the period, based in Upper Wortley, Leeds. In later years, the company extended their range, making porcelain baths, sinks and lavatories as well as stoneware and architectural terracotta, forming a branch of the Leeds Fire Clay Company (LEFCO).
