Large Astoria modernist planter by Hungarian manufacture 1965 MCM

About the Item

Large colorful funky Astoria plant holder by Pesthidegkút Ceramic manufacture. A playful, rough, lovable modernist creation from the 1965-70s. Hand-painted, glazed ceramic bowl. Its square shape, the side cutouts, and the perforated colored glaze make it light. So funky, so cool! About Pesthidegkút Manufacture The ceramics factory in Pesthidegkút first presented itself at the Budapest (Hungary) Industrial Fair in 1962. The designer of the decorative items made in the factory was Margit Csizmadia (1925-1991), who, according to contemporary articles, basically trained as a painter at the College of Fine Arts. In a 1981 memoir, Margit Csizmadia also said that in 1962 she was given the task of organizing artistic ceramics production at the factory in Pesthidegkút and becoming its designer. Regarding the initial period, he remembered with gratitude the president of the first jury, Géza Gorka, what's more: he declared himself his student. The initial help of Géza Gorka and the joint work with Ildiko Várdeák culminated in the Budapest International Fair organized in 1965, where the object designed by Margit Csizmadia and named the Etruscan vase was awarded the prize for the most beautiful product of the ceramics industry. A 1976 article about the products of the Capital Arts and Crafts Company reports that the production of porcelain and ceramics has increasingly fallen into the background. _______________________________________________________ In our studio, we curate a captivating collection of unique pieces primarily from the European period spanning the 1930s to the 1970s.
