Majolica Peacock Jardiniere Planter St Clement France Art Deco 1920s

About the Item

Rare majolica peacock shaped jardiniere or planter in Art Deco style was made by St Clement in Luneville, France. The figural planter features richly detailed surfaces, especially on tail and wing feathers, that are enhanced by hand-painted decor in shades of deep blue, green, and burnt orange; flowing, soft color transitions are emphasized by glossy glaze. Peacock's feet and tips of the wings give the planter additional stability. The back of the planter has flat build-in handle for easy carrying; the back, the bottom, and the inner surfaces of the planter are done in transparent glaze. The planter is signed on the bottom with "K. G. St Clement France"; K. G. stands for Keller & Guerin, who purchased Saint-Clement factory in 1892. This particular St. Clement mark was in use from 1920 to 1930, however, in 1922 Keller and Guerin sold the factory to Edouard Fenal; that dates the planter to early 1920s. The planter is in good antique condition with expected minor wear; the beak has signs of small professional restoration, one of tail feathers is lost , and right wing has a fleabite, that are shown on the pictures.
