About the Item
Circa 1965. 18" cubed. This planter was obtained from a bank in WV that also featured doors by David Gillespie of Forms and Surfaces - the company that was previously known as panelcarve that produced the works of the Ackermans for ERA industries. The estate of the Ackermans were contacted and they could not find such a planter in their catalog - although they did produce planters. The material is probably Oak with a dark finish. We speculate either it was a one-off or produced by a local craftsman for the bank. The sides are 1 and 3/16" thick solid wood planks. The planter has marks and minor damage but is fully useable in it's current condition. All 4 panels look the same but are not, with each one individually crafted with multiple passes of a routing machine and carving combined and is very complex. Organic and abstract and a remarkable example of Mid-Century craftsmanship. You can see one corner where a knot of the wood has popped off. 4 feet elevate the planter above the ground. Shown to scale with an Eames side chair to give context as to size. Ideal as a foyer or exterior showpiece but would not be suitable to outside unless covered or protected from weather.

Handblown Vase with Custom Stand by Nancy Freeman, 1979
By Nancy Freeman
Located in South Charleston, WV
Produced by American studio artisan Nancy Freeman of the Catskills Mountains of New York, 1979 signed and dated. Measures 8" tall and 6" wide and deep.
Exquisite ribbons of reds and orange color run through the vase and reminds one of the Charisma Series for Blenko. This urn vase has a purposeful bulge on the bottom where the signature is, and this is where the handcrafted Stand comes in with its hole below allowing the glass bulge to enter, thus it prevents the glass from tipping over. The Stand is custom-made by Freeman for the vase from wood and is likely mahogany. A very unique piece from the artist.
It is unique and makes an excellent designer decor...
